Dr. Korthals is the Director of Optometry for the Maple Grove Eye Doctors team at Pearle Vision in Maple Grove. Dr. Korthals grew up in Northwestern Iowa and obtained his optometry degree at The Illinois College of Optometry in 2004. Dr.Korthals says ‘It is a great honor and my duty to help preserve ones’ gift of sight.’ Dr. Korthals resides in Mound with his wife, Lisa, who has her Masters in Theology, and is an author, and daughters, Lexi and Ashley. He enjoys anything sports related, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his family.
Dr. Mueller is a full-time member of the Maple Grove Eye Doctors team, as of May 2017. Dr. Mueller grew up in Manitowac, WI, attended Marquette University for his undergraduate degree and received his optometry degree at The Michigan College of Optometry. His wife, Rachel, is a neonatal intensive care nurse in St. Paul, and their adorable dog, Max, is a beautiful Weimaraner! They love spending time outdoors and doing as much as they can with Max. Rachel and John will be welcoming their first child this summer of 2019. Dr. Mueller provides one time comprehensive eye assessments at no cost, for infants 6-12 months, as part of the InfantSEE® Program. In his own words, Dr. Mueller says, “I love that this profession allows me to interact with so many people, to diagnose and treat diseases that are both ocular and systemic, and to often make an immediate impact on the patient’s daily life.”
Dr. Knutson joined the team at Maple Grove Pearle Vision in 2018. She grew up in Brooklyn Park, attended the College of St. Benedict for her undergrad degree, and then obtained her optometry degree at Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon. Rachel enjoys seeing patients of all ages but especially loves seeing children for eye exams. Dr. Knutson provides one time comprehensive eye assessments at no cost, for infants 6-12 months as part of the InfantSEE® Program. Her favorite thing about optometry is seeing kids get their first glasses. In her free time Dr. Knutson enjoys walking and baking. Her husband Quentin is in residency to be a pediatric dentist. They love spending time with their pets: Copper (goldendoodle), Safi (calico cat) and Kale (bunny), and their baby, Phoenix Theodore Knutson. Dr. Knutson is thrilled to be part of the Maple Grove Eye Doctors team and looks forward to seeing you soon!
Dr. Samantha Ziegler grew up in Maple Grove and then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She obtained her Degree of Optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, in June 2018. Dr. Ziegler is happy to be back living in St. Louis Park in her new house and working with the team of Maple Grove Eye Doctors at Pearle Vision in the community where she grew up.
In her free time, Dr. Ziegler loves attending Minnesota United FC matches, finding new restaurants, and spending time with her new husband, Calvin (as of July 2018!) who works in sales with Minnesota United FC (no wonder she likes watching soccer ☺). Dr. Ziegler loved science in high school, working as an optometric tech, where she fell in love with the profession of optometry. She enjoys helping patients see the world more clearly with glasses and/or contacts. She enjoys that patients are usually happy to see their eye doctor.
Dr. Matt Hendricks joined our team of doctors in November 2019, having relocated here from Orange County, California, and we’re hoping he just loves our weather here☺. Dr. Hendricks grew up in Sacramento, CA, attended the University of California in San Diego, and then graduated Summa Cum Laude from Pacific University with a degree in Optometry. Dr. Hendrick’s wife, Katherine Jones, grew up in Madison, WI. Katherine is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine and will be setting up her clinic here – we can’t wait for that to happen! Finn, their cat, is still deciding how he likes Minnesota.
Matt likes cooking…and then eating his cooking ☺, weightlifting, hiking, and board games.
Guess what? Matt was in the same Optometry Class at Pacific University as Dr. Ziegler, so it’s super cool that they already knew each other!
Dr. Ben Hume is the newest member of our Maple Grove Eye Doctors team. He was born in Brandon, SD, a small town outside of Sioux Falls, right on the MN-SD border.
He graduated with a degree in Biochemistry from Minnesota State-Mankato in 2002 and went on to obtain his degree in Optometry at Illinois College of Optometry in 2006, just 2 years after Dr. Korthals graduated from ICO!
Dr. Hume and his family of wife, Shelly, 2 toddlers, Whitley and Weston, and baby, Wells. Born in Feb. 2020 have moved here from Colorado to be closer to family so they’ve built a new home in Mound, a few blocks from Lake Minnetonka, and close to one of his sisters and her family. The family is trading mountains for lakes and family! Life is a little chaotic right now so Shelly, who is an RN who specializes in interventional radiology and the ICU is taking a break from work to stay home with their 3 little ones.
Dr. Hume enjoys long distance running so he’s looking forward to exploring Minnesota trails and parks. He’s also a lifelong diehard Twins and Vikings fan so he’s looking forward to attending some games.
In his own words, what he loves about being an Optometrist:
“I love becoming part of the community as a trusted optometrist for patients of all ages. Optometry is a very social profession and I love interacting and learning about so many people daily and building those relationships over the years. I also have really poor eyesight so I love keeping up to date on all the new technology coming out and being able to offer it to patients.”
